Not Just From Dust: Educational Resilience and Healing on the Prairie of Oklahoma

Oklahoma City, OK

Returning for the 3rd time, this year’s education inequality trip will take a trip down south and explore the rich history and inspiring stories of Oklahoma with a central theme of resilience and healing. Famous for surviving the Dust Bowl and enduring the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, the state ranks 50th in education and 49th in healthcare. We will be visiting various schools, clinics, and working closely with communities in under-resourced and/or rural areas surrounding Tulsa and Oklahoma City. During our trip, we will also be filming for a potential documentary! If you are an education enthusiast, care about rural and/or underprivileged communities, enjoy working with kids, wanna watch some of the best sunsets in the country and a potential tornado, don’t mind getting your hands dirty, love learning some good ol’ history, want to visit a state you would not otherwise visit, or are just service-oriented, then this trip is for you!

Meet the co-leads:

Lindsay Flores

Howdy! I’m Lindsay, a junior studying human biology and education! I have been a participant and a co-lead for the past two education inequality trips, which is why I am beyond excited to lead the 3rd one back to my home state! Through my own experience in the Oklahoma education system, it has fueled a passion for understanding education and health inequities and for developing methods to tackle them through community-based and research-focused approaches. I love to teach, working with students from underrepresented backgrounds, and making the inaccessible accessible, all while wearing a lot of floral patterns. See y’all in Oklahoma!

Hey! My name is Zhangyang and I am a rising junior studying physics and education! I am originally from Enping, a small city that has poor quality education in Southern China. As you can tell, I am an education nerd and love learning education research through reading papers and listening to podcasts. This is my second time co-leading an ASB trip and I am very very excited to shift gears from Boston to Oklahoma. I believe one key part of learning is the social interaction and so excited to meet you all and learn more through your expertise and perspective!
