Immigration is an issue that has been at the forefront of politics for decades. Often, discussions revolve around how we can reduce the influx of immigrants from across the globe. However, New York City has taken a different approach to this. Out of New York City’s population of 8.3 million people, 3.1 million of them are immigrants a statistic which has solidified its title as the “City of Immigrants”. Serving as a sanctuary city, New York City has been touted as the place where immigrants, documented and undocumented alike, can come to the United States and succeed. During this service learning program, we will explore how the city economically, socially, and culturally supports the wellbeing of their immigrant population, as well as their city. We will engage with policy makers, advocates, community leaders, and non profits that work to see a more equitable future for immigrants here in the United States.
