Farmworker and Immigrant Health
Central Calfornia
This trip is intended to provide a broad overview of systemic injustices faced by immigrants and farmworkers throughout California with a focus on healthcare. Through speaking with community leaders and organizations like the United Farm Workers Foundation, our group will gain insight into issues faced by farmworker and immigrant groups. In addition, we will examine current solutions implemented by politicians and local organizations to better understand how these solutions can be improved and furthered. Given the multifaceted nature of immigrant communities, participants will journey throughout California, starting in the Bay Area and going through Central California down into Southern California.
Meet the co-leads:

Ava Acevedo
Hi! I’m Ava (she/her) and I’m a senior from Lodi and Stockton, CA, studying Public Policy and Earth Systems! Having grown up in the Central Valley and heard stories about my grandparents’ farmworking history, I’m thrilled to co-lead this trip and meet everyone. Learning firsthand from so many inspiring organizing leaders and advocates, all while immersed in the farmworker communities they are serving, is a transformative opportunity, and I can’t wait for our cohort to experience it.

Esmeralda Matias
I’m Esmeralda (Esme), a junior studying Human Biology and a proud eldest daughter of Guatemalan and Mexican immigrants. I aspire to a career in pediatrics with a personal commitment to advancing health equity and education in my community. Outside of academics, I enjoy reading, baking, hiking, dancing, and beach trips. ASB has been an absolute highlight of my undergrad, and I can’t wait to lead this trip again!
