Mālama Hawaiʻi: Exploring Equity, Identity, and Healthcare

Hilo, Hawaiʻi

To many, Hawaiʻi may seem to be an idealistic, tropical paradise. However, the reality of our island communities is one shrouded in health disparities that disproportionately affect native Kānaka Maoli populations. Our overarching trip goal is to engage students with the rural community of Hilo and actively participate in contributing to the improvement of local healthcare access. Hawai’i is so much more than just a vacation destination; it is a place of deep-rooted culture and communities rich in compassion and generosity. Through our ASB trip, we want to shine a light on these underrepresented issues, build meaningful relationships with local leaders, and volunteer to support community-driven solutions. Join us to raise awareness by being advocates for health equity and help us mālama Hawaiʻi.

Hi! I’m a third-year HumBio student passionate about addressing the social determinants of health in communities. For the past two years, ASB has been a transformative experience by allowing me to learn, teach, and advocate for health equity alongside other students. This year, I’m excited to focus on the unique healthcare challenges in rural Hawaiʻi and work toward fostering change through education and community partnerships!

Aloha kākou! I’m a Junior studying Human Biology who’s passionate about learning about how neuroscience and regenerative medicine can benefit my local community. Hilo has been my home since I was 9 years old and its generous culture will always hold a special place in my heart. I’m excited to lead an ASB trip to explore my hometown and raise awareness for the medical disparities rural Hawaiʻi faces.
